If I could describe this wedding in one word, it would be classy. Which makes perfect sense if you know Darden – she is classy and timeless through and through. Everything about her style and personality is full of grace and beauty. She’s the kind of girl who doesn’t wear make up hardly at all, but she has the most striking beauty. The Carolina Country Club was the perfect venue for their reception – it was gorgeous. The columns, the rolling hills, the beautiful weather… it was all so dreamy.
I have to share one of the sweetest, most intimate moments I’ve ever shared with a bride on her wedding day. Moments before their first look, Darden, myself, and the videographer were in the elevator making our way out to the green. Darden looked at me, a bit nervous (understandably), and said, “Nancy, is there a prayer you would suggest for me to pray throughout today? Something simple?”
I immediately thought back to my own wedding day. Goodness, if there was something I wish I had prayed or thought on throughout the day, it was to stop. To be still. To feel the Lord’s presence. I remember the distinct pauses I felt throughout my own day, and how very real God’s presence was during our ceremony.
I paused for a moment, trying to articulate all of that into one simple prayer.
“If I could pray one prayer over and over again on my wedding day, it would be this: Lord, let me feel Your presence every moment, and let me truly feel every moment.”
I always encourage my brides: Don’t fight the tears. Don’t fight the feelings that are so big inside you. This is the day that you want to feel it all!
As we walked off the elevator, I heard Darden whispering it under her breath:
Lord, let me feel Your presence every moment, and let me truly feel every moment.
We walked outside, and she saw her groom for the first time. After the sweetest first look you could imagine, we got kicked off the golf course (ha! The joys of being a photographer!), and finished portraits before their sweet ceremony and reception. That prayer was ringing in my mind and heart throughout their day, and to be honest, it’s stuck with me.
I pray it all the time, even today. And I’m so grateful for those few short moments with Darden in the elevator with tear filled eyes. God’s presence was certainly there.
It was one of those weddings I’ll never forget. Congratulations, Darden and Elliot!
