Dear William,

It’s hard to explain or express all that has happened these past years of marriage, but I will try. Here are a few thoughts on those years, those memories, and how excited I am for our future.

I love you with all my heart.

5 years. 5 whole years we’ve been married! I can’t believe it, can you? Remember those first days of marriage, when I was still a student in college, and you were working the night shift at Walgreens? I would wake up early and go to summer classes when you would go to sleep. The simplest of days, living in the mountains. No cable, no AC, no dishwasher. Only episodes of 24 and Planet Earth on DVD, with lots of hikes to the river and to waterfalls. I loved cooking macaroni and cheese for you. And frozen pizza. And buffalo dip. We were only 21 and 22 at the time, and we loved our sweet lives.

I’ll never forget the utter joy I felt on our wedding day. I cried from the moment I opened your gift while I was getting ready, (a Bible that I still read in daily,) until after the ceremony was over. I didn’t stop crying; I couldn’t. My young love for you couldn’t be contained. And the joy I felt in this photo above – of us running off together! It was indescribable. I had found my love. And you’ve only become more handsome and charming and loving since that day 5 years ago.

(Above) We celebrated our first anniversary in Beaufort, North Carolina, after staying at the Fearrington for 1 night. It was a sweet getaway, full of unbelief that a year could come and go so quickly.

One of my favorite things about “us” is how much we laugh. It can be no one but the two of us, and we’ll laugh so hard it hurts! All of our nicknames that are too silly to share on my blog, movies, games, cooking together – the little things that brought us so much joy. I love knowing I’ll never be bored of you.

I love thinking about all the places we’ve been together too. Charlotte, Charleston, Mystic, Stonington, NYC, Pennsylvania, Nashville, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Beaufort, Savannah, Hilton Head, Boston, Peter Island, BVI. I love dreaming about all the places we’ll go together one day. I love making traditions with you. We’re pretty great at enjoying the simplest things in life, and I really love that about us.

And the above photo was taken at Lake Gaston in 2011, one of our very favorite places on earth. I love all the times we grilled, swam, played board games, woke up at sunrise for a morning ski, jumped off the dock, ran in the neighborhood, took sunset cruises, and drank coffee on the porch.

I love this photo of us. Thank you for always protecting me, providing for me, and loving me.

You’re an amazing Uncle, by the way. All of our nephews and nieces think you’re pretty awesome. I love wrangling all of them with you, laughing and feeling so much love and hope for their futures, all while they test our patience and teach us more about ourselves. I look forward to many more years of playing “Monster,” playing kinect, jumping on the trampoline and being silly. You’re going to be an incredible dad one day.

Hey, remember that time we got a puppy? Yeah, that was pretty great!

Oh the lessons that puppy taught us! Winston sure has been a sweet, trying, adorable, frustrating, loving, faithful, loyal, wonderful first dog. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen you so angry and so smitten! Neither of us were dog people, and now we love dogs. Maybe a little too much. I love our little family.

Photo taken at the Crystal Coast Half Marathon February 2013

You are my biggest cheerleader. You stopped to see me, high fived me, gave me water, and made me laugh with Winston about 8 times during my half marathon. Seeing your face at every turn was better than crossing the finish line.

I remember this so vividly! We had not discussed the “cake cutting” whatsoever in all of our wedding plans, and you looked at me and said, “Let’s be nice.” I looked back at you with a certain look in my eye and said, “Do you know who you just married?” And proceeded to smash cake onto your face! One of my favorite shots from our wedding for sure.

I just want you to know that you are an incredible man, inside and out. Full of honor and integrity. I am so grateful to call you my husband.

This last image. I’m crying as a type this because this picture of you, that face, sums up so much of who you are to me. This photo was taken on June 1, 2013 at a wedding we were photographing in South Carolina. You drove crazy hours for me, stayed up late with me, drove home late that night only to send me off to a 4 day wedding conference the next morning. The sacrifices you have made for me these past 5 years are indescribable. Your faith in me, my work, and my business are the reason for my success. I could not, and would not have done this without you. Your willingness to work a full time job to support us so that I could grow my dream business is utterly selfless and loving. And every weekend, without fail, you pick up that camera, carry around my equipment, drive me all over Carolina so we can work and serve beautiful couples together – and then you are back at church on Sunday at 7am, no matter what. All so you can make my dreams come true.

I want you to know that you have made my dreams come true, because I have you.

Happy 5 years, love.
