Everyone loves to make people laugh, however, not everyone is really great at it. For instance, I often tell a joke or say something I think is hilarious, and I crack up at myself. About 30 seconds after I’m laughing hysterically, I will look around and realize no one else is laughing. Will often looks at me and says, “You’re the funniest person you know.” It’s true. I think I’m hilarious, but I’m not sure everyone gets my humor. Actually, I’m sure that very few people get my humor. My sister, my friend Sam, and occasionally Will. Yep, that’s about it.
For a long time I really was the funniest person I knew, but I have to say that’s not true anymore. I first was introduced to Jon Acuff through his blog, Stuff Christians Like, a couple years ago. I was re-introduced this past summer during the World Cup when he wrote a post about Vuvuzelas, and I almost fell off the couch when Will read it to me. “Vuvuzelas in Church.” Brilliant. After perusing his blog for some time, I then found “Understanding how metrosexual your worship leader is,” and “Church Names.” It has been the constant comic relief in our lives, especially as Will has just completed his first year in youth ministry. Sometimes while I’m trying to fall asleep at night, Will will randomly bust out in laughter. I’ll open one eye to see him reading Jon’s latest book. Of course I have to know what’s so funny that he just had to laugh out loud and keep me awake, so I’ll ask him to read it. I can’t stay mad because whatever he reads is always so hilarious I end up cracking up as well.
Will and I met Jon the first time we visited Financial Peace Plaza in Nashville a few months back. Wait, what? The Stuff Christians Like guy in Dave Ramsey‘s office building? How did this happen?! Amazing! He was unpacking boxes in his new office space. We found out Dave had recently hired Jon as a writer and social media genius, (Brilliant move, Dave!) and we were given the grand tour on his first day of work. We met him again at a Live Event in Raleigh, and yet again at the National Youth Workers Convention. Apparently whenever we travel, we’re supposed to meet up with Jon Acuff one way or another.
Since I was in Nashville for some photo shoots last weekend, we decided to do a family session in Franklin while I was there. It was a joy meeting his sweet wife Jenny, and his adorable girls, LE and McRae. I loved seeing how genuine they are with one another, and how their family is truly filled with joy and laughter. They are so silly and fun, a really close-knit group – exactly how a family should be. Meet the Acuffs…
Below : LE and McRae are doing their “secret handshake” in their sweet sunglasses. Don’t you love them already?
Love these next photos of Jon and Jenny. It’s pretty obvious they’re perfect for each other.
I love the expressions on the girls faces. So sweet and beautiful.
Below : my favorite.
Ok, if you have a sister, brace yourself for these next photos. There is nothing in the world as sweet as a relationship between sisters. My sister is my very best friend, and it’s obvious that LE and McRae will remain close for their lifetimes. Tears come to my eyes when I look at these photos – the fun, the laughter, the closeness. I believe these are some of my favorite sibling photos I’ve ever captured.
Jon, Jenny, LE and McRae – what a joy it was spending the morning together! I hope you love the photos as much as I do.
As for the rest of you… go buy Jon’s books. Do it. NOW. Seriously, they will make you smile and laugh a whole lot, and they make great gifts! Stuff Christians Like and Gazelles, Baby Steps, and 37 Other things Dave Ramsey Taught Me are hilarious.
In true SCL form, I’ll close with some questions…
