Thoughts from Nancy: I can’t begin to tell you how thankful I am for this woman. Rachel has quickly become part of our family, and I am so grateful for the lightness and joy she brings into our home. Milly adores her, and she has allowed me to fall in love with being a working mama. I thought you’d all enjoy meeting sweet Rachel!

Where are you from?
California! And before you ask the follow up question of why in the world I would move here from California (which is the number one follow up question I get, along with a look of disbelief), I have to say that North Carolina is amazing, I love it! Oh, and I sold my car, packed two bags, and flew here 5 years ago for a bit of adventure.

What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about people. Even though this might sound weird, I secretly like small talk. It’s not because I am a gluten for punishment, but because each person I meet has such a unique story, and it always fascinates me. Seriously, I could sit and talk to a stranger for hours. Also, people are what make life interesting, so why not put them first?

What is your current favorite book?
Currently I’m really enjoying this book called “The Wisdom of Psychopaths”…. yes. I know. It’s a little unusual, but it’s about how we can learn to be fearless, bold, and motivated leaders. All traits that unfortunately psychopaths have in excess. If it softens the blow at all, my all time favorite book is Pride and Prejudice. Yup, standard.

Your favorite food?
Mexican!! I LOVE Mexican food. As a kid we had the most delicious, amazing, wonderful Mexican food, and (sorry NC) I’ve yet to find something close here. Maybe I should have listed this as my number 2 most passionate thing…

What’s something that no one knows about you?
I love that by the nature of me answering this question, hundreds of people will instantly know something that few know. Alright, here it is: for a year right after high school I was the state representative for a youth organization in California and traveled around the state giving speeches and telling other organizations about leadership and philanthropic work. But here’s the best part. My “uniform” for these events was a sash, cape, and crown. Not even joking. It was legit.

Your favorite thing to do on a beautiful day?
Be outside. Anything outside (that doesn’t have to do with spiders and creepy crawlies). I especially love beach volleyball, but I’ll go for a bike ride, a walk, a sun-bathing session, or a chat in the sunshine.

What are you most excited about for 2016?
My birthday is in the beginning of January, and this year I turned 30 (woot woot #30likeaboss). For 365 days prior, I had been dreading it. But for some reason, as life would have it, January became a month where almost everything in my life jumped around and changed. So now, it’s become a year of optimism and hope, freedom and life. In 2016, the thing I’m most excited about is getting to see how this new year (and new decade) turns out, and what mysteries (and excitement) are in store for me.

Coffee or Tea?
Coffee! Tea! Coffee! Tea! Ugh. I can’t decide. Sweet tea is like the golden nectar of the sun. But there’s something about coffee that makes my heart sing. I love everything about the experience of drinking coffee, from holding the warm cup in my hand, to savoring each sip on my tongue, to smelling the sweet steam as it rises. Even iced coffee makes me swoon.

What are you grateful for today?
Today I’m grateful for sunshine. Every time I feel the sun on my face, my heart swells. It holds all the promises of joy and what can be. When it’s sunny out, everything seems better.

What’s your favorite thing about Milly?
That sweet baby! I’m not going to lie to you, I love Milly. I can’t get enough of her. I guess my favorite thing has to be that when I walk into a room when I’ve been gone (it could be as long as a weekend or as short as a nap), there’s a moment when she sees you, then realizes it’s you, and then breaks out into this huge grin like you’re the long lost best friend she’s always known would return to her. It makes my heart melt.

She seems wonderful. What an answered prayer for your family. :)

A great interview! It’s good to get to know the nanny here – I’m sure she helps keep everything together.

Hi Rachel!! A tip from a Texan transplant to NC–the only place in the Triangle where I will eat Mexican food is Chuy’s because it’s a Texan chain! I also buy a few dozen tortillas to go every time I’m there (I keep them in the freezer), because NC grocery stores just don’t seem to realize that tortilla makers are a necessity 😉
