Robin Quinn Brooks here. I’d love to get more acquainted with y’all, so pull up a seat and a glass of lemonade while I tell you a little about who I am and where I come from. Born and raised all over the state of North Carolina, my coastal heritage is my greatest pride. I bared my adolescent years in Raleigh, and in 2006 fell in love with the breathtaking town of Boone. My whole life I’ve been an avid historian and in 2008, I thought I’d make it official with photography as my craft of choice.

Some trivial tidbits...

I’m a total movie buff.

I love the smell of old books.  I also love to read them.

Take me to a new city and I will sniff out the best coffee shop within 48 hours.

I was born a traveler.

In January 2012, I’m taking traveling to a whole new level by going on the World Race. Visit my blog at robinbrooks.theworldrace.org to hear more about it!

To all you aspiring photographers or photographers young in the business, like me, let me leave you with a bit of encouragement. Build relationships. You will learn more about photography and be more successful in the business the more you nurture your relationships. If you have a little training but you want to further your knowledge, seek out opportunity. Assist. Second shoot. Pursue internships. Contact photographers and heed their advice. You can learn more in one conversation with a photographer than in any class you take.

Oh, and shoot in manual. ALWAYS.

Top 10 Things I Learned From Nancy:

1 • Branding, branding, branding. The way you present your business-through everything from your photography style, to your logo, to how you package your products- is a crucial part of success.

2 • Set goals, write them down, and cross them off as you complete them. As obvious as this may sound, it really does help you to be more efficient and prioritizing your business and your life becomes a piece of cake.

3 • Communicate with your clients. Nancy’s constant rapid-fire response to client emails and her attention to their needs and questions are truly inspiri

ng. Sometimes (okay, most of the time) this part of the job seems tedious and exhausting, but in the bride’s eyes, it can be the difference between a frustrating wedding photographer, and one who puts you at ease in a time of severe stress.

4 • It’s okay to say no. Sometimes you’ll have to turn down a session, or even a wedding. There are only 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, and 52 weeks in a year. Realizing the limits of your business and staying within those limits can keep you from overwhelming yourself. Not only that, but attempting to push yourself to accomplish more than you are physically, mentally, and financially able to can be very detrimental for your name in the long run.

5 • Organization will keep you sane. Not just in your workflow, but also with your accounting. Keeping all your receipts and records organized will allow everything to run much more smoothly when it comes time to do taxes.

6 • Happiness is contagious. Every time I showed up at Nancy’s house she greeted me with a smile and a hug. She made the studio into a joyful work environment and I couldn’t help but catch the happy bug. Every day seemed like a blessed experience, not like work.

7 • Social networking is incredibly beneficial for the growth of your business, even for those of us who aren’t bloggers. This is something I learned that because of my stubbornness, I have yet to put into practice! But just by seeing how far Nancy’s business has come since her blog started, I know it to be true!

8 • Stay away from credit cards! And have LOTS of patience. It may take several years for your business to grow using only cash, but it will be totally worth it. It may take incredible strength on your part (and mine) not to go out and buy two 5D Mark II’s along with some L series lenses right off the bat. Work with what you have, don’t overprice for what you can produce, and wait. That, along with some good old-fashioned work ethic will have your business up and running in no time.

9 • You get out what you put in. If you shoot weddings part time, and don’t invest financially into your business, it will not, and cannot, grow beyond that. I learned that the hard way.

10 • Internships are crucial for budding photographers. Working with Nancy was my second internship. I learned a wealth of knowledge from both, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I did another one down the road. There are numerous internship opportunities for photographers in all avenues- wedding, studio, product, food, portrait, photojournalism…etc. etc… and you will learn more during an internship than you will in any class you take.

Thoughts from Nancy...

Robin was the best thing that happened to me this summer! Seriously.  Love this girl. I took so much time in choosing who would fill the shoes of my intern, and she definitely was the perfect fit.  Her constant communication with me, her cheerful attitude, and her willingness to do random/crazy errands for me with enthusiasm made this summer so productive! Her internship has come and gone... all too quickly if you ask me.

Her next step in life is pretty incredible. She will be traveling  The World Race.  Go check it out if you haven't already!  And if you feel so led, support her mission in 2012.  She is going to be changing so many lives, and you can be a part of it.

Robin, you are one special lady.  Never stop being you! So excited for the future the Lord has for you.

A few more photos from her last day at the NRP Studio... we were so sad, but I think Winston will miss her the most!

I rarely watch TV. Will and I decided that the first year of our marriage, we really wanted to focus on our relationship, communication, and really being present when at home.  After reading several marriage books and listening to the advice of successful marriages around us, we decided to take up the challenge to not sign up for cable for 1 whole year.  Funny thing was, we purchased a 50" flat screen TV and didn't watch any TV shows!

Don't get me wrong - we LOVE a cheap date night, which usually involves Redbox and our awesome flatscreen.  The first year of our  marriage we lived in Boone and didn't have many friends who lived nearby, so we would have a movie date night close to once a week. We love movies, and and we love TV on DVD.  The Office, 24, and Planet Earth (yep, we're dorks,) were our favorite choices the first 2 years of marriage. I also have every season of Gilmore Girls on DVD, and love to watch that when I'm home alone. (Let's just say, that is not Will's favorite show.)

Next month Will and I will celebrate our 3rd Anniversary, and we never did sign up for cable.  We have a little antenna which brings us the major networks - a grand total of 5 channels.  And honestly, we turn on the TV maybe 3 times a week, watch it for 5 minutes, then say "this is stupid!" and turn it back off.  The 1 show we do watch every week is The Office, but we watch it together and enjoy spending the time together.

I say all of this to say, setting this boundary has freed us to become better people, have a stronger marriage, and live more successful lives.  When Will comes home from work and I wrap up my workday at the studio, we don't sit in front of the TV.  We talk to one another about our days, we eat dinner, and we walk Winston.  Then we usually try to read 30 minutes every night before going to bed. Talk about a refreshing way to spend your time!

I was listening to Dave on the radio today, as usual, and a woman who is starting her own business asked him - "Could you give me some advice on how to manage my stamina?"  She was planning on quitting her day job to pursue her at-home business, but was getting close to burning out over all the work required of her.

His first answer? "Don't watch TV. It's easy at the end of the day to just sit in front of the Television, but you are wasting too much energy that way. I'd rather you get more sleep - that will help your stamina tremendously."

He followed that first answer with "It's also crucial that you get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, and maintain a strong prayer life."

I couldn't agree more.

•••

Here are some pretty incredible statistics that will hopefully challenge the way we spend our time:

Percentage of households that possess at least one television: 99

Number of TV sets in the average U.S. household: 2.24

Percentage of U.S. homes with three or more TV sets: 66

Number of hours per day that TV is on in an average U.S. home: 6 hours, 47 minutes

Percentage of Americans that regularly watch television while eating dinner: 66

Number of hours of TV watched annually by Americans: 250 billion

Value of that time assuming an average wage of S5/hour: S1.25 trillion

Percentage of Americans who pay for cable TV: 56

Number of videos rented daily in the U.S.: 6 million

Number of public library items checked out daily: 3 million

Percentage of Americans who say they watch too much TV: 49

I love that you and Will didn’t sign up for cable. I want to do that when I get married one day! Your day sounds so refreshing!!

  2. Amber May 18, 2011 8:00 am

I couldn’t agree more! We have chosen not to have cable either and I think we definitely make the most of our time at home together. It’s astonishing what people are paying to watch on television.

  3. Amanda G. May 18, 2011 3:56 pm

We did the same thing. No cable for our 1st year of marriage. Probably some of the best advice to a newly married couple. We did get cable after that 1yr. and we enjoy watching a few shows now and then but we dont have much time to waste watching TV. One thing we learned in our 1st year is that it is imporant to eat dinner at the Kitchen table (not in front of the TV) together every night. We still make that a priority.

  4. Janine May 18, 2011 7:49 pm

I love this idea. I am a definite lover of no television while the sun is out however I wouldn’t be able to convince Craig to give up cable completely. He has too many sports he wants to watch that he would spend all his time at the bar watching them. ;) I do want to try to not watch television while eating dinner for the first year of our marriage. Thanks for this thought Nancy!

I’m blog stalking today as I’m a little bored at work, but let me just say that I appreciate this post so much! It gives such great advice. I’m constantly talking to Paul about how much time we spend in front of the tv. Thank you for this, it might just be the motivation we need!
