BVI Trip

“Live like no one else, so that later, you can live like no one else.” – Dave Ramsey

If you have followed me for a while, you know that Will and I have waited a long time for this trip. When we got married in 2008, we lived on one income while I was still a student in college. We lived on a very tight budget, because we were committed to never go into debt. Instead, we wanted to save and set ourselves up for living in financial freedom.  After a five years of marriage and of growing my photography business, we decided to continue to live on less than his income alone. Everything above that, we put towards our house, and we ended up paying off our house in 32 months. (Read our full story: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5.)

We paid off our house in December of 2012, and decided that 2013 was the year to celebrate! We had lived like no one else for 5 years – a lot of our friends and family thought we were a little too “intense.” We rarely went out to eat. We rarely shopped for clothing or household things. I sold old clothes at a consignment store. Our refrigerator was empty at the end of every month, because we ate everything we purchased. (Hello, leftovers!) We pinched pennies and did everything we could think of to live on less than 1 income!

When 2013 began, a year without any payments (!), we knew we wanted to go on an amazing vacation! It was time to really live like no one else! Not only to celebrate paying off our house, but to celebrate our 5th year of marriage. What an incredible trip we had!

And yes – for those of you who are wondering, we were all alone on this boat for a week! Will was the Skipper, I was his first mate. We hired a Skipper for 24 hours to teach us the ropes, then we were on our own in the deep blue sea. Will did an amazing job. He is particularly proud of the first photo in this post because that was the first time he docked the boat on his own. (With the help of his first mate, duh.)

We cooked, ate, relaxed, and slept on the boat. It was our home away from home for a week! Cozy, tiny, and it had everything we needed. It really showed me that we don’t NEED half the stuff we think we do. It was awesome.

We experienced a different island every day, and we moored in a different cove every night. Our schedule for the week looked like this:

Day 1: The Bight, Norman Island (aka Treasure island)
Day 2: The Bitter End &  Saba Rock
Day 3: Loblolly Bay, Anegada
Day 4:Peter Island (where we honeymooned)
Day 5: Monkey Bay, Marina Cay
Day 6:The Baths at Virgin Gorda, Manchioneel Bay
Day 7: Cruise to the Marina and travel home

I’m so grateful to have experienced this crazy adventure with my very best friend. I love you William Ray. We would have never reached these goals without your amazing leadership, and I’m so grateful for that. Here’s to many more adventures, explorations, and anniversary celebrations!
