And we're off! Today is the day that we venture up North to New England. I am so ready for this! Will and I have an incredible trip planned (thanks to John), and we also plan to get in lots of sleep and rest. We both have been working very hard lately, and it's time for us to rejuvenate before fall wedding season hits. Be sure to follow along with our trip here on the blog, and also through Instagram. Here are some activities I'm most looking forward to:
New York City
- Highline Park
- Seeing a show on Broadway
- Running on the Brooklyn Bridge
- 9/11 Memorial
- USS Intrepid
Mystic, CT
- Holmberg Orchards
(I might be most excited about this! I have always wanted to pick apples in the fall!)
- Cider Mill
- Attending a lovely wedding (& dancing the night away)
Rhode Island
- Newport Cottages
Boston
- The Freedom Trail (& many stops along the way)
- Harvard (I'm mainly interested in finding where the episode of Gilmore Girls was filmed! Maybe we should stay at the Cheshire Cat?)
- Old North Church (Paul Revere)
- Anything having to do with the life of John Adams
I have some fun blogposts scheduled to hit the blog while I'm gone, and I'll be updating a few photos from our trip as we travel. Also, I will be out of the studio (which means I will not be answering emails!) from 9/12-9/18. I will answer emails as soon as I return. Thanks for your patience :]
SO... what are your favorite things to do in New York, Mystic & Boston? To follow our trip daily, check in with my Instagram feed & Will's Instagram. See you in New York!

Nancy and Will! I live near Boston and do ministry at Harvard, so I definitely have some suggestions
Try Regina’s Pizza in the North End and definitely stop at Mike’s Pastry on Hanover St for a cannoli. Get bubble tea at Dado in Harvard Square and just explore! Email me if you want more suggestions. I love playing tour guide!
Hi Nancy:
In NYC – just take an hour and sit in Central Park (Sheep’s Meadow is a great place to start), bring some tea, coffee, juice (recommend Blue Dog Cafe for great juices and teas and it’s near CP) and just BE. If it’s a nice day the people watching is awesome as well
For a nice dinner that’s not too insane price-wise, we highly recommend L’Artusi in the West Village – fresh ingredients, great atmosphere, good service, kind of hidden neighborhood feel. For a drink try MacDougal St also in the West Village (numerous small bars/restaurants). Love the Highline!
Harvard is kind of my neighborhood (I’m the next square down on the subway). If you have time do the student led walking tour (Harvard Tours with the straw hats NOT the university led ones – more fun!) of the campus. It is kind of touristy, but a Duck tour will give you a great overview of the city (I have taken 5 of them and not had the same driver twice). Looking for a run? Try the Esplanade – if you happen to be here on a Wednesday evening you’re welcome to join our women’s running group for a 3 or 4 mile loop around this area
Wander Beacon Hill – very quaint. Get your photo taken with the Make Way For Duckling statues in the Public Garden. Check out the Kennedy Greenway (they sometimes have markets/events on). Dinner? Via Matta (Italian, slight $$), Central Kitchen (one of our neighbourhood restaurants), Sibling Rivalry in the South End (chef brothers face off with the same ingredients), Catalyst (also our local), Bin 26 Enoteca (Beacon Hill). If you’re here Tuesday or Friday there’s a farmer’s market in Copley Sq (also Trinity Church is there – beautiful!), have lunch and sit amid the bustle of the city. Have a great time!! Email me if you have other questions. Selfishly, I wish you weren’t coming on holidays so I could get a mentoring session with you!
Nancy, There are so many Broadway shows to pick from! If you want help narrowing it down, take a look at Newsies (it has gotten incredible reviews and is a wonderful show), Also check out Wicked (which is obvious), Mary Poppins is a simply delightful show, fun and light hearted, or Billy Elliot (more serious, definite language issues, but a great story that will have you laughing and crying every 5 minutes). Just a couple of thoughts
Enjoy your trip!
OMG, please find the Cheshire Cat!
While you are in Newport, RI stop by La Maison de Coco for some tea infused truffles or maybe even some crêpes. Delicious! Or if you are looking for some authentic New England clam “chowda” (I also recommend the clam cakes and doughboys) stop by Iggy’s in Warwick on Oakland Beach.
